VOLUNTEERING AT UPMINSTER WINDMILL
The Friends of Upminster Windmill is a voluntary organisation which maintains and opens the windmill on behalf of the local community.
We rely on volunteers for everything we do, and are always keen to welcome new members to our friendly team. We offer a huge variety of roles but are especially keen to talk to anyone interested in helping with windmill guiding on open days, or supporting education and youth group visits.
We provide training and support for all roles and welcome people with all levels of experience. So whether you have decades of experience, want to build new skills for the workplace or simply want to meet new people or try something new, please do get in touch.
OUR MISSION
HERITAGE
Maintaining the windmill as one of the finest examples worldwide of a smock mill of its type.
EDUCATION
Providing a diverse and engaging range of learning and development activities for people of all ages and backgrounds.
COMMUNITY
Putting the windmill at the heart of local life, and reaching out to those who haven’t traditionally visited the site.
KEY ROLES
We welcome new volunteers for all roles but are particularly keen to grow our teams in the following areas:
Windmill Guides
Our team of windmill guides are stationed throughout the mill on public open days to help tell the story of the mill’s working years - why it was built here, how it worked, and who lived here.
We provide full training and support and no prior knowledge of windmills is needed, just a keenness to chat with our visitors and a willingness to learn!
EDUCATION AND YOUTH GROUPS
The education and youth group team offer group visits for schools and organised youth groups, comprising workshops targeted at specific curriculum areas, usually for Key Stage 1 and 2.
The roles can range from helping with activities in small groups right up to leading workshops for a full class of children. No teaching experience is required, just a love for engaging with children and young people on a variety of learning objectives.
Appropriate training and support will be provided for all roles.
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please contact us at volunteer@upminsterwindmill.org or fill in the adjacent form.
We are committed to providing a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all our volunteers and visitors. Proof of identity is required for all roles and suitability will be assessed during our on-boarding process.
